 Happy Thursday Dear Growers!

I hope you have enjoyed the weekend; true to tradition, it rained at the Apple Blossom parade over the weekend.

News this week? We have two great events coming up this July, and I would love to see you all there at both!

Event #1

Dr. Kevin Ker will be here from the 17-19th July. We will be discussing:

CROP BALANCE; CROP LOAD

*Shoot Thinning

*Crop Estimation

*Shoot Positioning

-Along those lines, we’ll also cover vine nutrition and address any other questions you may have.

This event will be an in-field, hands-on experience held at two different locations over two days. I encourage you to take this opportunity to note any questions, reflect on grape quality, and consider your goals for this harvest season and those to come.

Event #2;  24 July

Drone Demonstration Day at Blomidon Winery

Using drone technology in vineyards goes beyond spraying. On July 24, we’ll demonstrate how drone imagery and precision agriculture tools can detect variability in soil and nutrient levels in vines.  Our aim is to explore the development of site-specific management zones for more targeted and effective input application.

Our Ag Tech Team, drone flight providers and Cavendish will be on hand to demonstrate possibilities and answer all your questions.

CALL FOR BORON DEFICIENT SITES:

I have previously mentioned that I will be doing a Boron application trial on New York Muscat this year. After assessing a few sites, I would appreciate your help in locating a vineyard with Boron levels below 0.5 ppm.

Please check out your soil test reports and let me know: 1) if you are interested in participating; 2) if your vineyard soil test indicates lower Boron levels.

Boron excess is just as damaging as deficiency, so when contacting me, please also forward your soil test report, and if you have it- your tissue test as well. Thank you for your help.

The aim is to show that foliar boron will improve fruit set and crop load.

Erineum Mite VS Phylloxera

1.2.

Photo 1: Erineum Mite (red and scaley with white spots on the underside of the leaf.
Photo 2. Phylloxera. Red galls.
They may seem similar, so it is important to be able to tell the difference.

Both are currently present in the vineyards, so please be vigilant. These photos were taken Friday, 30th May.

PHENOLOGY: (Growth Stages)

The observations were made at several locations around the Valley (Gaspereau, Wolfville, Port Williams, and Sheffield Mills) Please remember that depending on your location, these observations may vary slightly.

Thank you all for your time this week, and I look forward to seeing you soon. If you are seeing anything in the vineyards and need a second opinion, please don't hesitate to call or email me.

Cheers!
